GOING DEEPER: The Mass: Gestures, Posture, Reverence

This lesson focuses on the why and the what of reverence in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, both in general and in particular. Looking at the Incarnation as our why, we’ll then look at the basic points of reverence in the Mass and around the church that help us to have a deeper love for Jesus present in the Eucharist.

In order to be well informed about reverence in the church in general and at Mass in particular, it is important to realize we are whole persons, spirit and flesh, and the two form one another; ergo, our actions speak to the truth in our hearts, and our actions are outward signs of our interior love (of God and neighbor- that is why modesty and respect are important in human relationships also).

“External actions are signs of internal reverence.” -St. Thomas Aquinas
